El Salvador

Las Azulinas is a group of women artisans in El Salvador. The purses and clothing are all handmade. The women use cotton and indigo that is locally grown. El Salvador was the largest producer of Indigo for 400 years. The Spanish arrived in 1522, unfortunately, they brought with them disease which killed most of the Mayans. After conquering the remaining people, the Spanish setup plantations. They grew cotton, balsam and indigo.

After the civil war, 1979 to 1992, the people needed to be able to support themselves. A group of women formed Las Azulinas cooperative. Here they utilize their natural gifts to make clothing and accessories.
